Chalking
Trend Alert!
Chalking is a tend that is sweeping the internet, Its a great way to add fun color to your hair without the commitment.
Lauren Conrad has been one of the trendsetters of chalking bringing it to all of our pinterests. Making us want more.
Last year I attemped this look with semi permanent haircolor. It only lasted 4 weeks and the colors ended up melting together... but it was fun.
With the trend sweeping the internet, Hair Care Companies are starting to carry products that you just wash out. I used Kevin Murphy Color Bug in purple and orange on my hair today! It was really easy to do. You just rub it on the hair strands that you want colored and your good to go!!!
Tips:
**Excess chalk can come off when applying, remember to protect your clothes!
** It says on the packaging to put leave in conditioner in blonde hair before applying because it can cause staining. I did not do this. When i wash it out i will report back :)

The team was feeling the need to get super creative and have a little fun. It was a full day of hair and 2 days of set design to get it right. I even busted out the power tools. All was worth it, I love this set.

Interview with Ruthann about her Hair Extensions
Ruthann stopped in today for her two week check up. I did a little interview with her about her experience with extensions. She was really skeptical about getting them at first she had heard alot of things that made her not want to do hair extensions.
JeskaNewman- How long had it been since you had long hair?
Ruthann- 3 years.
JN- What has been your experience with the extensions? Do you like them? Any Dislikes?
R- Its very long. Its easier to style, I can curl or flat iron it and it stays all day. Curls don't hold in my natural hair. The extensions also add more volume, which is nice. Having long hair makes me feel pretty. The thing I dislike is now it takes longer to wash and dry, and I have to actually use a brush now, but it's worth it.
JN- How was the application process?
R- Fine, It didn't hurt. It took 3 hours including the haircut.
JN- How was the first week? Did you experience any tenderness or pulling?
R- No, It wasn't that bad. There was no discomfort it just felt different. Now I feel like its my hair. Yesterday I grabbed a piece of hair I thought was my own because it was short, but it was an extension.
JN- How is brushing, styling and Flat ironing?
R-Its fine, it takes longer than with short hair but not as bad as I was expecting. It tangles more than short hair, but I haven't noticed any matting or anything. The brush you gave me works well.
JN- What were some of the negatives you heard about Hair Extensions and what was your experience with them?
R- One thing I was really worried about was blending the extensions with my hair. A girl I know had extensions and it was obvious where her hair ended the rest were extensions. They weren't blended very well at all. I had also heard from many people that they glue the hair in, it smells, gets matted and clumped together, and a lot of your hair comes out when the extensions are removed. I was glad to hear there were no glue or chemicals involved in this process. I can wash my hair with the extensions so it doesn't smell bad. And my hair was cut to blend with the extensions so you cannot tell where my own hair stops, says everyone at work.
JN-What were people's reactions when they saw you with long hair?
R- Everyone loves them!! I think it was all the compliments I received about how beautiful it looks it really what made me like my hair even more. People are surprised at how well it bends with my natural hair and that you can't tell how it's attached. Several times I have been told I, "look very different with my hair down." Because they think it looks like my hair. When coworkers mention my extensions around a patient whose never seen me before, they have been surprised to find out it's not my own hair. I've been told the hair made me sassy and sexy. I think there was already some sass before I got hair extensions, but I'm really gonna miss the long and sexy when they get removed.
If your interested or just want to know more about hair extensions please contact me at 425.200.4247 or book a consultation appointment online there are many different options lets talk about what would be right for you! I'm offering 50% off application until the end of June.

Things I Cant Live Without: Part 1- Hair Tools
Yesterday I was running around and realized there are items that I absolutely love and can’t live without. I figured why not share those things with my friends and clients.
Since I’m a hairstylist I figured that I might as well dish all the secrets about my hair routine. Please take note: Everyone has different hair, things that work well for me may not be appropriate for you.
USPA Kashmir Shampoo and Conditioner-
I’m a girl who regularly uses bleach on my hair. Which dries my ends out, The Kashmir Shampoo and conditioner is sulfate free and moisturizing so it won’t step my color and hydrates those needy ends. The only thing I have issues with about these guys is sometimes I don’t feel like my hair is very clean so I tend to need to wash twice. (More shampoo won’t help. What helps is washing rinsing then washing again)
LOMA Pearatin Nourishing Oil-
I have been using LOMA’s Fortifying Reparative Serum for the last 5 years and I swear that is the only reason I don’t have an unwanted pixicut. It strengthens and repairs damaged hair. Well this last year they released a new Serum the Nourishing Oil. I quickly fell in love. First of all it has the best vanilla smell ever! (I love it so much I bought a Candle) but it adds extra hydration to your hair and is a thermal protectant too! In the end my hair is always so shiny and really really soft.
USPA Amplifying Gel-
This stuff is hair volume amazing! It has a sugar protein that bonds to each strand of hair and makes them appear to be larger. Creating the illusion for fuller thicker hair. I really work it into my crown and always use heat to activate it!
mop C-System Firm Finish Strong Hold Hairspray
I love this hairspray!! Its one of the driest hairsprays you can find in the US. You wont ever have that sticky feeling its got a good hold but you can still brush it out and work with it. I love it for volumizing my fine hair.

GHD Gold Classic Styler-
If you’re an avid flat iron user invest in one that costs more than $100. I’ve been flat ironing my hair for 10 years I found that cheaper flat irons don’t have steady heat, one minute its hot, the next its warm. They also tend to be coated with ceramic or another heat conducting material rather than the entire plate. I’ve found that the coating can chip in the less expensive flat irons. My number one pet peeve is when Flat Irons pull your hair. I found that some the less expensive ones my hair got stuck to screws which caused hair damage. If you see that the plate is made out of gold RUN! Throw that thing in the garbage and don’t allow it to see daylight. I’ve heard many stories about the gold plated irons to actually burn hair. So after lecturing you let me tell you about the new love of my life my GHD Gold Classic Styler. This baby heats up in 15 seconds and even beeps when it’s ready! It runs through hair so smoothly and the exterior doesn’t get very warm at all. My favorite feature is it turns off after 30 min if you accidently leave it on!
Hair Secret: I Shampoo and Condition every other day. You don’t need to shampoo every day to have healthy hair. Actually shampooing strips your natural oils out of your hair and can cause more harm than good.
**All of these products are available at Evolve Hair and Art. The Flat Iron is available by special order

Step it up Seattle!
When you think of fashion in New York you think designer labels and high fashion, people don't leave their house unless they're dressed to the nines. California: super tan ladies baring it all lots of plastic surgery and bleach blonde hair. Texas: Huge Texas hair and caked on makeup. When you think of Pacific Northwest fashion what do you think of? Socks and Sandals, Hiking Boots, North Face, pasty white skin.... Glamorous huh? Yeah yeah we have the luxury of taking it easy. Not caring as much as we should on our looks. Im telling you I get away with fashion murder sometimes. I remember one night I went out wearing a northface and highheeled boots to a pretty nice bar not even taking a second thought. A guy from out of town was almost offended on how casual I was dressed. I remember going to beauty school with the grossest hair ever all the time. People dont want to get their hair done by someone who cant do their own. Thankfully its been a long time since i went to work with super gross hair ( i would like to give thanks to dry shampoo and bobby pins) Ive stepped it up a bit but I really could do more. Could you?
I also have a friend in her early/med twenties. She really doesnt have to try hard, shes naturally pretty. She works in Sales but in more of a casual setting. On the weekend when she goes out she spends a hour or two doing her hair and makeup and her clothing and looked drop dead gorgeous. (she gets more attention from guys than anyone I know) Well for work she doesnt care, she says work is gross and that she doesnt feel the need to step it up. (I also think its because she hates her job) She showers throws her hair in a ponytail and puts mascara on. By the end of the day shes just not very put together she always feels like she needs to go home, change, do her hair and makeup if she wants to do anything after. Let me tell you as a friend and someone who sells beauty services/products it frustrates me!
Over the years, I have learned that in sales half of what your selling is yourself. If you had twins selling the exact same thing but one was a little more dolled up than the other who would you talk to first not knowing anything about either. Or if you had two guys selling the same thing but one was sexier than the other. Let me tell you im gonna flirt with the the sexy one. In my eyes if she spent an extra 15-30 min getting ready in the morning she wouldn't need to spend the hour getting ready after she gets off work for an after work activity and she would be in a better mood because she had a more successful day in sales. But hey, its Seattle, we can get away with it right?
I also have a client whos the complete opposite. Shes in her 40's with children the same age as I am and is unemployed at this time. She has the best motto in life, If i keep my self up i keep happy. She get a Mani/Pedi every two weeks, her hair done every 6 weeks and refuses to leave the house without her hair and makeup done. Now im sure your thinking wow, this woman is high maintenance and kinda picturing a trophy wife. Not a chance, She doesnt over do her self, she keeps it simple and never really spends more than 45 min including a shower every morning. For her keeping herself up is the one thing she does for herself. It makes her happy, its her vice. She never has to question am I presentable? are my toes polished? Are my legs shaved? Its one less thing to worry about. This is how she stays young at heart.
If there is one thing ive learned about being in the beauty industry there is nothing better than getting pampered, it is the best way to change a blah day to an awesome day. I was having a crappy day, i hated my wardrobe, i was out of makeup and just wanting to stay in bed. Well due to the fact that I ran out of my makeup I needed to march my butt to the M.A.C. store and pick some up before I cursed my makeup bag the next day. 30 minutes after entering makeup heaven I left spending way more money than a person should ever spend but BOY did i look good. The makeup angels fixed my face up gave me a few tips set me up with a whole new regime. It was a total game changer. All of a sudden I was ready for the day.... actually i was so excited about my new makeup I was happy for a whole week.
Ive set off this week to start caring for my self more. I got my first manicure and pedicure in a year. Im a freshly waxed woman. Im getting a massage once a month and Im doing whitening strips for my teeth. Im so thrilled about my mani and pedi. Which has been the highlight of my week. Next week I plan on giving myself an extra 30 minutes every morning to get ready. Maybe I might even eat breakfast for once in my life :)
Now that I have taken the challenge are you willing to? I double dog dare you to spend and extra 15 minutes on your self a day. I want to hear about what you added or expanded on in your morning routine and if it made any difference.
